Day 1 Arrival in Delhi

Namaste! Welcome to India! On arrival your Adventure Leader will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. There are no planned activities for today. After your long flight, you may want to freshen up and relax. If you arrive early and feel like going out to see the city, just talk with your Adventure Leader who will be on hand to assist you with directions, give you information on places to see, organize transport and point you in the right direction. Make sure you get plenty of rest today as we will start early in the morning tomorrow. This evening there will be a group orientation meeting complete with traditional North Indian snacks, refreshing drinks and dinner where you’ll have the opportunity to get to know your Adventure Leader and fellow travelers while discussing the adventure that lies ahead. (Snacks, Dinner)

Day 2 Bharatpur

In the morning we set out for Bharatpur, home of the UNESCO World Heritage Keoladeo Ghana National Park. After checking in to our hotel, which is just a stones throw away from the reserve, you’ll have time to freshen up with a swim before we head into the park. A haven of wetlands and forests, the sanctuary is home to over 400 species of birds including a selection of herons believed to be among the best in the world, along with a wide variety of other wildlife. We’ll explore the park by bicycle or peddle rickshaw (your choice) traversing the back trails of the sanctuary with our naturalist guide before returning to our hotel for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 Bharatpur and the Taj Mahal

In the morning after yoga and breakfast, we’ll visit the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built in the 16th century by Emperor Akbar, the well-preserved ruins were the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1571 and 1585 AD before being deserted. After exploring this ancient city we’ll head out for Agra where we’ll visit India’s most famous landmark – the stunning Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal of course needs no introduction and is a remarkable mausoleum built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his favorite wife – Mumtaj Mahal. When one sees it in person understanding its history, the feeling is best summed up in the words of Rabindranath Tagore who described the tomb as “one tear drop…upon the cheek of time”. Returning to our hotel, you’ll have time to relax and freshen up before we meet in the evening for snacks, drinks and a vegetarian feast for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 Kishangarh

Today we set out into the desert stopping at Abhaneri village to visit its epic half millennium old Chand Baoli step-well, the largest step-well in India, before arriving in the romantic Kingdom of Kishangarh. Founded by a Jodhpur prince four centuries ago, the kingdom flourished with its military prowess and fortunes earned as a member of the Mughal court. Here we’ll be staying at the Maharajah’s beautiful monsoon palace built in 1870 just outside the walls of the massive Kishangarh Fort. Set on the banks of the monsoon fed Gundalao Lake, we’ll be staying in the palace’s lakeside rooms with gorgeous views of the calm waters of the lake. Arriving in the afternoon, you’ll have time to relax before we head out on foot into the village exploring the colorful bazaar and centuries old streets of this princely state founded in 1611 AD. During our stay here be on the lookout for kites, peacocks, herons and wild ducks that call the nearby fields and monsoon fed lake home. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 Kishangarh

After yoga we’ll set out to learn a little bit about marble. Rajasthan is famous for its marble – you’ll see it in temples, homes and palaces and this morning you’ll get a chance to find out how it comes to be – from the quarry, to the cutting factory to the final product. After learning about marble we’ll head out to the banks of one of India’s largest salt lakes, Sambhar Lake, which has provided the local communities with salt for thousands of years. Throughout its history, Rajputs, Mughals and British alike, have all exploited this rich source of salt. We’ll visit the salt works and pans here where we’ll see salt “farmed” using many of the same methods they used centuries ago. If we’re lucky we may also see some of the area’s colorful but shy winged visitors, the flamingos. After visiting the salt flats, we’ll head to the village of Roopangarh for lunch where we’ll dine in a royal palace that dates back to 1648 before exploring the centuries-old streets of this colorful medieval town. Returning to our palace in the late afternoon, you’ll have free time to explore the streets of Kishangarh on your own or simply relax taking in the views and regal splendor of the old monsoon palace. As the sun sets, we’ll meet for snacks, drinks and a tasty Rajasthani feast! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 6 Bhadrajun

Today we get an opportunity to experience India well off the beaten track as we travel to the rustic yet charming village of Bhadrajun where we’ll be staying as personal guests of the Raja (equivalent of a Lord) at his 16th century palace residence. This picturesque village will be our home for the next three days as we focus on local rural village life, culture and customs. Upon arrival in Bhadrajun, with its palace nestled among the red-tinted rocky desert hills and its delightfully peaceful village, you’ll have free time to relax and take in the serenity of rural Rajasthan. As the sun sets over the desert landscape, we’ll meet up in the palace dining room for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7 Bhadrajun

The history of Bhadrajun actually dates back thousands of years and is even mentioned in the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. We start the day with yoga on the palace walls and a hearty breakfast before heading off to visit a local school in a nearby village as guests of the students and teachers. Later we’ll return to Bhadrajun and explore the narrow-winding streets of this centuries old village before going by jeeps on safari into the desert to watch sunset from atop a sand dune. As the sun dips off into the arid horizon, we’ll continue our journey out to a remote and auspicious Hindu temple that dates back well over 3,000 years for their aarti (Hindu ritual) ceremony. At nightfall we’ll return to our palace residence for traditional local drinks and a candlelight dinner as personal guests of the Raja’s family. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 Bhadrajun

After yoga, we’ll visit the Bishnois. The Bishnois are strict vegetarians and have been strong environmentalists for centuries. Known for their protection of the trees and wildlife that surround their villages, the Bishnois are self-sustaining and many of their villages, like the one we visit today – look similar to the way they’ve looked for hundreds of years. For lunch we’ll join one of the Bishnoi families at their home for a traditional local vegetarian Bishnoi meal. After lunch we’ll head back to the palace where you’ll have time to freshen up and relax. In the late afternoon we’ll visit a local girl’s school where we’ll join the students in the popular village game of sitolia. From the school we’ll head outside the town to a colorful shepherds village, where brightly attired locals go about their lives much as they have for centuries – their vibrant clothes standing out in stark contrast to the surrounding desert. In the evening we’ll return to the royal residence where we’ll meet on the ramparts of the palace with breathtaking views overlooking the desert for drinks, snacks, dinner and a colorful evening of traditional Marwari music and dance. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 9 Aranyawas

After yoga and breakfast, we drive to the magnificent 15th century Ranakpur Jain temple – one of the five holiest sites in the Jain religion. This awe-inspiring temple sprawls over 48,000 square feet, has 20 domes and is supported by 1,444 pillars. Later, we head up into the Aravalli Mountains, one of the oldest mountain ranges in Asia, to Aranyawas, a serene hillside eco-retreat surrounded by forests, rivers and small villages. This is our home for the next two days, where we stay in cottages with scenic views. Checking in to our hillside chalets, we’ll have time to relax and take a dip in the retreats step-well inspired pool. In the early evening, we’ll meet for tea under the Banyan tree before setting out on a scenic hike around the eco-retreat’s gardens. As the colors of the surrounding hills and forest change to night, we’ll make our way to the eco-retreat’s kitchen for our cooking class where we’ll help create tonight’s dinner. After preparing a tasty North Indian meal, we’ll sit down around the campfire for dinner under the stars. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 10 Aranyawas

Our journey today takes us to the formidable medieval citadel of Kumbhalgarh. This massive 15th century fortress rises 1,100 meters from a prominent ridge and is encompassed by a 20-mile long defensive wall. It has seven majestic gates, seven ramparts, soaring watchtowers and rounded bastions making it nearly impregnable. It also boasts excellent panoramic views of the Shero Mallah Valley. After spending the early afternoon at Kumbhalgarh, we head back to Aranyawas for a late lunch before hiking through the surrounding fields and forests to a nearby Bhil (local tribe) village. As the evening approaches we’ll settle down back at the retreat for a night of Bhil tribal music, dance, drinks and of course – more tasty food! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 11 Mount Abu

With lush forests, lakes and a cool climate, it is no wonder why the picturesque town of Mount Abu, located on the highest peak of the Aravalli Mountains, attracted the ruling elite of old Rajasthan including the British, who made it their summer capital. However, well before they set up shop, sages and saints were attracted by the peak’s serenity, making it home to many sacred sites – the most stunning of which is the legendary Jain Dilwara Temples. Dating back to the 11th century, the artisanship of these intricately carved marble temples is nothing less than striking. After the temples, we’re off to Guru Shikhar. Standing at 5,676 feet, it is the highest peak between the Himalayas in the north and the Nilgiris in the south. On reaching the top, we’ll enjoy brilliant views for sunset before heading back to town where we’ll take a stroll along Nakki Lake and have dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 12 Ahmedabad

After breakfast we head out for Ahmedabad, the central city and economic capital of Gujarat – one of the staunchest vegetarian states in India. Here we’ll visit the grandest of Gujarat’s famous step-wells, Adalaj Wav. Built in 1499 by Queen Rudabai, the reigning Islamic ruler of the time, Adalaj Wav was a reprieve for the royal family as well as for weary travelers and pilgrims during the long dry summer months. From the step-wells we set off for Sabarmati Ashram. Founded by Mahatma Gandhi on the outskirts of the main city, the ashram was the base for the Indian freedom struggle transforming it into a symbol of non-violence and peace. After returning to our hotel and freshening up, we’ll go for dinner at one of the city’s finest vegetarian restaurants for a pure Gujarati feast. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 13 Sasan Gir

Today we drive across the plains of Gujarat to Sasan Gir and the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary – home of the last remaining habitat of the Asiatic Lions in the wild. We’ll be roughing it out for the next couple of days staying just outside the sanctuary on the edge of the forest in tents where you’ll have plenty of time to explore the jungle and its surroundings. Before arriving at Sasan Gir we’ll stop at the Mahabat Maqbara in Junagadh. A stunning and intricate catacomb of the former Nawab rulers, the Mahabat Maqbara is one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture found in Gujarat. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 14 Sasan Gir – Safari Tent Camp

The last remaining habitat of the Asiatic Lion, the Gir Forest National Park is a mixture of thick forests, banyan trees, rivers and streams. In addition, the national park is also home to leopards, deer, antelope, wild boar, monkeys, jackals and a plethora of bird varieties. After our morning yoga session down by the creek and breakfast, we’ll visit the sanctuary’s orientation center where you’ll find information and details on the animals of the national park. After lunch we’ll hop aboard jeeps and head out into the jungle on safari returning to our camp at nightfall. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 15 & 16 Diu

Leaving the jungle behind, we head out for the western coast of Gujarat stopping at Somnath Temple, a highly sacred Hindu pilgrimage site held in great reverence throughout India. After visiting the temple, we travel to the 16th century colonial Portuguese island settlement of Diu. Nestled off the coast of Gujarat in the Arabian Sea, Diu is a unique fusion of history, sun, sand and sea. The town is a maze of winding streets filled with colorful buildings and ornate cathedrals; the centerpiece being the 1541 built massive and impregnable Portuguese Fort – complete with a moat. We’ll spend two days here taking in the relaxed pace of the old settlement including exploring the island’s historical sites as well as natural beauty where you’ll have plenty of free time to wander around the town, spend time on the beach – or both – whatever you feel up for. (Breakfast (x2), Lunch (x1), Dinner (x2))
Day 17 & 18 Palitana

From the coast of the Arabian Sea we journey inland to Palitana, the most important pilgrimage site in the Jain religion. A faith devoted to strict vegetarianism, Jainism is based on the principals that all living creatures should be treated with mutual respect and no one life is greater than the other. Resting at the foot of Shatrunjaya Hill, Palitana is the base camp town of one of India’s most scenic and extraordinary pilgrimage sites. Here we begin our climb up 3,500 steps to the summit where over 850 meticulously carved temples adorn the tranquil spiritual peak, which is complimented by epic views of the surrounding mountains, rivers and valleys below. While here we’ll be staying just outside the town at the hundred-year-old royal country retreat of the Gohil Rajputs. (Brunch (x1), Breakfast (x2), Lunch (x1), Snacks (x1), Dinner (x2))
Day 19, 20 & 21 Udaipur

After breakfast we set out on the road leaving the plains of Gujarat behind and head back into the desert for the enchanting oasis city of Udaipur. Arriving in the early evening at our home for the next three days, a charming old noble’s haveli (mansion) set alongside the banks of the Lake Pichola, we’ll settle into our rooms with picturesque views of the lake, the historical city and Royal Palace. After freshening up, we’ll meet on the rooftop where we’ll unwind over snacks and drinks while watching the colors of the old city change to night.

Often referred to as the Venice of the East, Udaipur is one of the most romantic towns in India. Surrounded by lakes, rolling hills and rich in history, we’ll spend our time here taking in the alluring princely charm of Rajasthan visiting this over four centuries old city’s stunning palaces, ancient temples and vibrant bazaars.

One of the highlights of our stay here is our visit to a very special animal rescue organization known as Animal Aid. We’ll spend the morning with them out at their base where they not only offer a hospital, but also a home for the abused and neglected animals of the city.

While in the “city of lakes” we’ll also meet up with our friends, who just happen to also be very good chefs, for a mouthwatering vegetarian cooking class where we’ll be their guests at their home as they teach us how to prepare an absolutely delicious traditional Indian vegetarian meal – or should we say feast! But prepare to roll up your sleeves as we each not only learn, but also cook, our own Indian vegetarian dinner. That’s right – we’re all responsible for cooking our own meals so no mistakes (just kidding)! But don’t worry – the chefs will be there to guide us through every step of the way!

On our last night we’ll sample some of the tastiest Rajasthani cuisine the oasis town has to offer – a Mewari vegetarian feast at a local Rajput family’s home, while enjoying traditional live music and folk dances and sipping on plenty of refreshing beverages. Make sure you have a good appetite and a good thirst – and don’t forget to bring your party shirt and dancing shoes! (Breakfast (x3), Lunch (x3), Dinner (x3))
Day 22 Udaipur – Train to Delhi

After breakfast you’ll have the day free to get in any last minute souvenir shopping or just kickback and relax until we meet up in the early evening to catch the overnight train to Delhi.

Did you ever scratch a donkey under his chin? Have you ever bottle-fed a baby goat? Ever helped a dog that lost her leg learn to walk again? On our Camels & Canines & Cows – Oh My 15-day adventure you’ll have the chance to do this and much more.

Join VegVoyages as we immerse ourselves into the rich heritage and culture that is Rajasthan, India. During this adventure you’ll not only see, but experience local traditions, customs, ways of life, language and of course – food while also making a hands-on difference to the lives of hundreds of injured and neglected animals as you assist locals at the very special grassroots animal refuge, Animal Aid.

Animal Aid grew from a feeling of sadness into an idea of hope and into a hospital of miracles as Erika Abrams and Jim Myers along with their daughter Claire began the dream that is now known not only around the region, but also around the world, as a reliable and loving refuge for animals most people would rather forget.

With the help of local friends, Animal Aid has grown into what it is today with 20 staff including three veterinary surgeons making Animal Aid a life-saving force for thousands of animals every year. The sanctuary runs both a busy animal hospital and refuge, where homeless street animals are rescued, healed and loved. The purpose: to bring relief to suffering animals and to awaken compassion among people. With roughly 150 animals treated everyday, the Animal Aid story continues to blossom in a thousand different ways, and each “way” has either fur or feathers, hooves or tails, bills or muzzles.

This VegVoyages adventure is 100% vegan. Though all are welcome, the meals we’ll be enjoying – which includes some of the tastiest cuisine Rajasthan has to offer along with a cooking class where we’ll learn to prepare a delicious full course Indian meal, will all be vegan.

So come explore with us on our Camels & Canines & Cows – Oh My! adventure in the heart of Rajasthan – where you’ll not only discover the magic and mystery of the desert but also return home knowing that because of you and your assistance – you’ve made a direct and much needed difference in many animals’ lives!

In addition to plenty of delicious vegan food and lots of local interaction, this adventure also includes daily yoga lessons, a vegan cooking class, hiking, jungle and desert safaris, historical walks, Hindi language lessons, live music and dance and much more.

Day 1 Arrival in Delhi

Namaste! Welcome to India! The first part of our adventure will focus on introducing you to the culture, language and customs of India. On arrival in India, our Adventure Leader will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. You’ll have the day free to relax and catch up on any rest from the long trip. In the early evening, we’ll have our group orientation meeting on the rooftop of our hotel where you’ll have a chance to meet your fellow travelers and enjoy North Indian snacks and drinks while discussing the adventure that lies ahead as the sun sets over Delhi. We’ll also have our first language and cultural lesson tonight where you’ll be introduced to the rich language of Hindi – a language spoken by over a half billion people. After our orientation meeting we’ll head out into the heart of Delhi for some of the best South Indian food found in the capital where we’ll enjoy a delicious feast of dosas, pooris, idlys and idiyappams! (Snacks & Dinner)

Day 2 Taj Mahal & Bharatpur

After breakfast, we hit the road for Agra to take in the Taj! India’s most famous landmark – the stunning Taj Mahal is a remarkable mausoleum built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his favorite wife – Mumtaj Mahal. One of the new Seven Wonders of the World, when one sees the Taj Mahal in person the feeling is best summed up in the words of Rabindranath Tagore who described the tomb as “one tear drop…upon the cheek of time”. After taking in the Taj, we’ll cross the border into Rajasthan where we’ll be staying the night just a stones throw away from the Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur. Arriving in the late afternoon, you’ll have time to take a swim and freshen up. In the early evening, we’ll have our language and cultural lesson before settling down for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 Kishangarh

Bharatpur is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Keoladeo Ghana National Park. The national park is a haven of wetlands and forests and is home to over 400 species of birds, including a selection of herons believed to be among the best in the world, as well as a wide variety of other wildlife. In the morning, we’ll explore the wetlands of the national park by bicycle or tri-shaw (your choice) traversing the back trails of the sanctuary with our naturalist guide. After returning to the hotel to freshen up, we’ll set out for the desert Kingdom of Kishangarh, en route visiting Abhaneri village and its epic Chand Baoli step-well. Said to be the deepest and largest step-well in India, its history dates back well over half a millennium. Arriving in the Kingdom of Kishangarh in the afternoon, we’ll settle into our rooms at the Maharajah’s beautiful monsoon palace that was built in 1871 outside the medieval Kishangarh Fort on the banks of the monsoon fed Gundalao Lake. After settling in, we’ll explore the centuries-old streets of this old princely state founded in 1611 AD. In the evening, we’ll meet up on the palace grounds for our day’s language and cultural lesson before sitting down for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 Kishangarh

Founded by a Jodhpur Prince four centuries ago, the Kingdom of Kishangarh flourished with its military prowess and fortunes earned as a member of the Mughal court. The Maharajahs here were not only known for their successes on the battlefield, but also as patrons of the arts and the area’s paintings, many of which adorn the walls of their palaces – including the one we’ll be residing at, are well known throughout India. After yoga overlooking the lake and a tasty vegan breakfast, we’ll jump right into today’s language and cultural lesson before setting out to explore this ancient town’s vibrant local bazaar, 17th century fort, old cenotaph gardens, temples and surrounding countryside. Rajasthan is famous for its marble – you’ll see it in temples, homes and palaces and this afternoon we’ll get a chance to find out how it comes to be – from the quarry, to the cutting factory to the final product. In the early evening, we’ll settle down back at the palace for a colorful evening of local folk music and dance, refreshing drinks and a tasty vegan Rajasthani dinner! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 Bhadrajun

Today we get a chance to experience India well off-the-beaten-track as we cut deep into the hinterlands of Rajasthan’s desert traveling to the rustic yet charming village of Bhadrajun. The history of this picturesque, delightfully peaceful and ancient village dates back thousands of years and is even mentioned in the famous Indian epic, the Mahabharata. For the next two days, this will be our home where we’ll be staying as personal guests of the Raja (equivalent of a Lord) of Bhadrajun at his 16th century palace residence where we’ll focus on local village life, customs and culture. Nestled among red-tinted rocky desert mountains that are home to jackals, foxes, deer, panthers and wild peacocks, we’ll arrive in Bhadrajun in the afternoon and settle into our rooms at the palace before meeting for today’s language and cultural lesson. As the sun sets over the rocky red cliffs that protect the fort, we’ll join the Raja’s family in one of the courtyards of the palace for drinks, snacks and a traditional local vegan meal. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 6 Bhadrajun

After yoga on the palace walls, we depart for a local village school where we’ll be the guests of the students and teachers. From the school, we’ll set out to visit a nearby Bishnoi village to learn about their way of life and join one of the Bishnoi families at their home for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Bhadrajun for today’s language and cultural lesson before exploring the narrow-winding streets of this centuries-old village by foot. During our walk, we’ll visit a local girl’s school where we’ll join the students in the popular village game of sitolia before going by jeeps on safari into the desert to watch sunset from atop a sand dune. As the sun dips off into the arid horizon, we’ll continue our journey out to a remote and auspicious Hindu temple that dates back well over 3,000 years for their aarti (Hindu ritual) ceremony. After the aarti ceremony – we’ll return to the royal residence where we’ll meet on the ramparts of the palace with breathtaking views overlooking the desert for drinks, snacks, dinner and a colorful evening of traditional Marwari music and dance. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7 Udaipur

After yoga on the palace walls with breathtaking views of the village and desert, we say goodbye to the village of Bhadrajun as we hit the road for Udaipur – the City of Lakes! On the way – just before we ascend up into the beautiful Aravalli Mountains, we’ll visit Ranakpur Temple – one of the five holiest sites in the Jain religion. A faith devoted to vegetarianism and compassion for all living creatures, Jainism is based on the principals that all living beings should be treated with mutual respect. This awe-inspiring white marble marvel of a temple, built in the 15th century, sprawls over 48,000 square feet, has 29 halls, 20 domes and 1,444 pillars each carved differently. From the temple, we’ll ascend into the Aravalli Mountains, the oldest mountain range in India, where we’ll stop for lunch and have today’s language and cultural lesson before continuing on to the enchanting oasis city. Often referred to as the Venice of the East, Udaipur, with its rich almost 500-year-old history, is said by many to be one of the most romantic cities in India. Arriving in Udaipur, we’ll settle into our home for the next eight days – a charming old noble’s haveli (mansion) set alongside Lake Pichola with picturesque views of the lake, historical city and Royal Palace that cradles the water’s edge. In the evening, we’ll meet on the haveli’s rooftop where we’ll watch the colors of the old city along the lakeshore change to night. Joining us for refreshing cold drinks, tasty snacks and a sumptuous dinner will be the founders of Animal Aid. Tonight, as the sun sets over this ancient city, we’ll discuss the work we’ll be doing at the sanctuary over the coming week. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 Animal Aid, Udaipur

The highlight of our adventure begins today as we set out in the morning to the base of Animal Aid. A very special animal rescue organization, Animal Aid not only offers a hospital, but also a refuge and home for the abused, abandoned and neglected animals of Udaipur and the surrounding areas. Whether they have fur or feathers, hooves or tails, bills or muzzles – they all have a safe place to recover and if needed, a home, at Animal Aid. Over the next week we’ll spend our time here helping wherever we can, which will all depend on the needs of the day – but rest assure we’ll be busy as they treat up to 150 animals daily. The activities we’ll be involved in include helping wounded animals recover by giving them personal individual attention, assist in feeding all the animals both large and small, brushing and grooming, and assist in the evaluating, monitoring and treating of all our four legged friends (as well as some two legged friends – i.e. monkeys and birds). Also, for those who like gardening – the refuge has lots of opportunities for people with a green thumb and for those who have an eye for decorating, there are many areas around the refuge that we’ll help paint and give special attention too. You’ll not be asked to clean inside animal cages but there are plenty of areas around the refuge that need some “sprucing up” which we’ll help out in to make a better environment for the animals that call the sanctuary their home. In the evening, we’ll return to our rooms on the lake where we’ll freshen up before joining a local Rajput family at their home for drinks, snacks and a tasty home cooked meal for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 9 Animal Aid, Udaipur

Starting the morning with yoga on the rooftop and breakfast in your room overlooking the lake and centuries-old ghats that lie across it, we’ll then head off for our day’s work at Animal Aid. Everyday we will have a special home-cooked vegan lunch prepared and delivered to the refuge – which is set in a beautiful countryside setting outside a small village – so we don’t have to come back in to town until the evening. After our day with the animals at the center, we’ll return to our haveli in old town Udaipur where you’ll have time to freshen up before we meet on the back verandah and board our boat for a sunset cruise around Pichola Lake. Seeing the “city of lakes” from the boat offers a totally different perspective of this medieval city with its old palaces and ancient temples cradling the water’s edge and is a relaxing way to end the day. Coming ashore at one of the city’s scenic ghats (traditional wide steps that lead into a lake), we’ll take a walk through the old part of town to a traditional house that has been converted into an eclectic restaurant of sorts for some of their tasty dishes for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 10 Animal Aid, Udaipur

Every morning you’ll have the option of having your breakfast delivered directly to your room or in the restaurant, the rooftop or on the back verandah of the haveli – all of which have great views of the lake and old city. We will have a special vegan selection of breakfasts available for you to choose from so you can pick which one you would like to have everyday. After breakfast, we’ll board our vehicles and travel out to meet our friends at the animal refuge where we’ll spend the day helping the many new patients, as well as permanent residents, at the center. In the early evening, we’ll return to our haveli where you’ll have a chance to freshen up before we set out to a longtime local vegetarian hotspot for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 11 Animal Aid, Udaipur

Surrounded by lakes, rolling hills and rich in history, Udaipur, with its lakeside palaces, ancient temples, vibrant bazaars and narrow-winding streets, is the perfect place to take in the alluring princely charm of Rajasthan. Today, after spending the morning and early afternoon at Animal Aid, we’ll head back into the city to explore this centuries-old medieval capital of the Kingdom of Mewar. Though the history of Udaipur dates back almost half a millennium, the Mewar Kingdom and its ruling dynasty trace their roots back over 1,200 years. This afternoon we’ll spend our time exploring the kingdom’s historical landmarks including one of the most impressive of India’s palaces, Udaipur’s Royal City Palace. A series of palaces built by different kings over the centuries, the first being built in 1559 AD, the palace houses intricate halls, courtyards and rooms and boasts some great views of the surrounding city and lake at its center. We’ll also make our way up to one of the city’s historical hilltop forts along its ancient wall for some epic views. In the evening, we’ll settle down back in town for a tasty South Indian vegan dinner with plenty of piping hot sambar and fresh chutneys in accompaniment. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 12 Animal Aid, Udaipur

After yoga on the rooftop and breakfast in your room, on the lakeshore verandah or in the restaurant – whichever you like, we’ll hop aboard our vehicles and set out to Animal Aid. After a day at the refuge, we’ll return lakeside where you’ll have a chance to freshen up before dinner. Tonight for dinner, we’ll be making our way to another local vegetarian favorite for a tasty Rajasthani full course meal – so make sure you have a good appetite, as there will be plenty to eat! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 13 Animal Aid, Udaipur

As we always say (and probably say too often because we like to eat so much) – a great way to get an idea about a country’s culture and heritage is through its food! There is no doubt that India offers vegetarians some of the tastiest vegetarian food to be found anywhere in the world. With its unique combination of spices and herbs, and sauces and curries – Indian food is an exciting culinary treat! Deeply rooted in Hindu culture, vegetarian food has been cultivated and refined throughout India for thousands of years. This said, after our day out at the refuge, we’ll come back to our “haveli on the lake” in the late afternoon where you’ll have time to freshen up before we begin our cooking class. Gathering in the lobby, we’ll meet up with our friends who just happen to also be very good chefs! This evening we’ll be their guests as they teach us how to prepare an absolutely delicious traditional Indian vegan meal – or should we say feast! Be prepared to roll up your sleeves as we begin our cooking class because under the watchful guidance of the chefs, we’ll not only learn, but also cook tonight’s meal. Our first stop: the wet market. Here we’ll learn about the traditional and colorful local bazaar scene – a treasure trove of spices and flavors where essential ingredients such as chilly, ginger, mint, cilantro, curry powders and tamarind are found amongst a colorful selection of spices and freshly farmed veggies. After the market, we’ll head to the kitchen where we’ll roll up our sleeves and cook up a delectable Rajasthani vegan feast. Pre-requisite for tonight: a hearty appetite! So be prepared to eat – and eat well! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 14 Animal Aid, Udaipur

Our last day out at the refuge. We’ll spend the day from morning until night at Animal Aid helping out one more time before returning to Delhi tomorrow. In the evening, we’ll return to our rooms on the lake to freshen up before we meet for our farewell party. Hopping aboard auto rickshaws, we’ll travel to the steps of one of Udaipur’s most auspicious temples where we’ll visit the temple and then set out down the narrow back alleys of this ancient city to a local Rajput family’s home in the heart of the old town. Here, we’ll join the family and all our friends from Animal Aid for our last night in the City of Lakes. From the rooftop terrace of the home – with striking views of the old city and royal palace, we’ll watch as the colors of this ancient capital, its palaces and surrounding hills change to night while we enjoy traditional live folk music and dance, refreshing drinks, scrumptious local snacks and some of the tastiest cuisine the oasis town has to offer! So make sure you have a good appetite, great thirst – and don’t forget your party shirt and dancing shoes (flip flops are okay too)! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 15 Udaipur & Delhi

After breakfast, you’ll have the morning free to get in any last minute souvenir shopping or just simply kickback, relax and take in the regal charm around the lake before we meet in the early afternoon to catch our flight back to Delhi. Our adventure ends on arrival at the airport in Delhi. If you would like to extend your stay here (or in Udaipur) or for any onwards assistance, please contact your Adventure Leader who will be more than happy to help. Bahut, bahut dhanyavaad (thank you very much)! (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 2 Roopangarh

Today, we set out into the desert traveling to the historical village of Roopangarh, once a hub of activity as it was located strategically on one of the main routes of the Mughals. Built by Maharaja Roop Singh in 1648, we will be staying at Roopangarh Fort Palace, a captivating example of Rajput defensive architecture. Inside its intimidating fortifications are underground passages, armories and granaries, all evidence of its chivalrous past. The Maharajas here were also patrons of the arts and the area’s paintings, including those that adorn the palace walls, are well known throughout India. On arrival, you’ll have time to freshen up before we meet on the royal terrace of the palace for drinks, snacks and stunning views of the surrounding desert. After drinks, we’ll head out on foot from this over 350 year-old medieval fort-palace into the narrow-winding lanes and colorful streets of its surrounding village learning about the kingdom’s rich history. As the sun sets, we’ll settle down back at the palace on the royal terrace for dinner under the stars with epic views of the moonlit desert. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 Bikaner

Founded in 1488, Bikaner is a lively desert outpost surrounded by scattered sand dunes. Located on the crossroads of the ancient caravan routes, Bikaner was built as a trading center centuries ago. The charm of its golden days is still evident in the forts, palaces and havelis (mansions) that fill the city. Before arriving in Bikaner we’ll stop at the village of Deshnok to visit the 600-year-old Karni Mata Temple, home to hundreds of rats who roam freely as they are considered sacred. After arriving at our heritage hotel, one of the old palaces of the Bikaner royal family, and freshening up, we’ll meet in the early evening for drinks in the garden before sitting down for a tasty vegan dinner in the palace’s regal dining hall.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 Bikaner

After yoga in the garden, we’ll join a local Rajput family at their home for a tasty, traditional vegan breakfast. Finishing breakfast, we’ll explore the city’s storybook-like streets visiting the 16th-century impregnable Junagarh Fort. Considered one of India’s most impressive forts, it is also one of the few forts that were not built on a hill. This did not make it any less secure, with its formidable walls and moat – it was never conquered. From here we’ll continue to explore the heart of the old city including its auspicious temples. We’ll also make a special visit to a local orphanage where we’ll join the kids in playing India’s most favorite pastime – a game of cricket. As evening approaches on Bikaner, we’ll move on from the orphanage back to the hotel where you’ll have time to freshen up before we meet our friends – who just happen to be very good cooks! This evening we’ll be their guests as they teach us how to prepare an absolutely delicious Bikaneri vegan meal! Our first stop: the wet market. Here we’ll learn about the local bazaar scene and pick up the fresh ingredients we’ll need for tonight’s cooking class. After the market, we’ll head to the kitchen where we’ll roll up our sleeves and not only learn, but also cook, tonight’s meal – a delectable Rajasthani vegan feast. Pre-requisite for the evening: a hearty appetite! So be prepared to eat – and eat well! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 Jodhpur – Bhadrajun

Today we travel to the rustic yet charming village of Bhadrajun. Here we’ll be staying as personal guests of the Raja (equivalent of a Lord) at his 16th century palace residence. In this picturesque village we have the opportunity to experience India well off the beaten track. On the way we’ll stop in Jodhpur for lunch and visit the 15th century Mehrangarh Fort, which towers over the blue city on a rocky ridge. Upon arrival in Bhadrajun, with its palace nestled among the red-tinted rocky desert hills and its delightfully peaceful village, you’ll have free time to relax and take in the serenity of rural Rajasthan. As the sun sets over the desert landscape we’ll meet up in the palace dining room for dinner.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6 Bhadrajun

The history of Bhadrajun actually dates back thousands of years and is even mentioned in the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. We start the day with yoga on the palace walls and a hearty breakfast before heading off to visit a local school in a nearby village as guests of the students and teachers. Later, we’ll return to Bhadrajun and explore the narrow-winding streets of this centuries-old village before going by jeeps on safari into the desert to watch sunset from atop a sand dune. As the sun dips off into the arid horizon, we’ll continue our journey out to a remote and auspicious Hindu temple that dates back well over 3,000 years for their aarti (Hindu ritual) ceremony. At nightfall, we’ll return to our palace residence for traditional local drinks and a candlelight dinner as personal guests of the Raja’s family. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7 Bhadrajun

After yoga we’ll visit the Bishnois. For lunch we’ll join one of the Bishnoi families at their home for a traditional local vegan Bishnoi meal. In the evening we’ll return to the royal residence where we’ll meet on the ramparts of the palace with breathtaking views overlooking the desert for drinks, snacks, dinner and a colorful evening of traditional Marwari music and dance.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 Aranyawas

After yoga and breakfast, we drive to the magnificent 15th century Ranakpur Jain temple – one of the five holiest sites in the Jain religion. This awe-inspiring temple sprawls over 48,000 square feet, has 20 domes and is supported by 1,444 pillars. Later, we head up into the Aravalli Mountains, one of the oldest mountain ranges in Asia, to Aranyawas, a serene hillside eco-retreat surrounded by forests, rivers and small villages. This will be our home for the next two days where we stay in cottages with scenic views.

Day 9 Aranyawas

Our journey today takes us to the formidable medieval citadel of Kumbhalgarh. This massive 15th century fortress rises 1,100 meters from a prominent ridge and is encompassed by a 20-mile long defensive wall. It has seven majestic gates, seven ramparts, soaring watchtowers and rounded bastions making it nearly impregnable. It also boasts excellent panoramic views of the Shero Mallah Valley. After spending the early afternoon at Kumbhalgarh, we’ll head back to Aranyawas for a late lunch before hiking through the surrounding fields and forests to a nearby Bhil (local tribe) village. As the evening approaches we’ll settle down back at the retreat for a night of Bhil tribal music, dance, drinks and of course – more tasty food! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 10 & 11 Udaipur

The enchanting oasis city of Udaipur, often referred to as the Venice of the East, is one of the most romantic cities in India. Surrounded by lakes and rich in history, we’ll spend our time here taking in the alluring princely charm of Rajasthan visiting stunning palaces, ancient temples and vibrant bazaars. Our home for the next two days will be at a charming old noble’s haveli nestled on the tranquil banks of Lake Pichola where we’ll be staying in lakeside rooms with great views of the old city and palaces along the water’s edge. One of the highlights of our stay here is our visit to a very special animal rescue organization known as Animal Aid. Located in a nearby village, they not only offer a hospital, but a home for the abused and neglected animals of the city. On our last night in the “city of lakes”, we’ll sample the tastiest cuisine the oasis town has to offer – a Mewari feast at a local Rajput family’s home while enjoying traditional live music and folk dances and plenty of refreshing cold drinks. (Breakfast (x2), Lunch (x2), Dinner (x2))

Day 12 Kishangarh

From Udaipur, we make our way through the desert to the Kingdom of Kishangarh. Founded by a Jodhpur prince four centuries ago, the kingdom flourished due to its military prowess and fortunes earned as a member of the Mughal court. Here, we’ll be staying at the Maharajah’s beautiful monsoon palace, the Phool Mahal. Located on the edge of Gundalao Lake, the palace was built in 1870 just outside the walls of the massive Kishangarh Fort on land that was originally used as the pleasure gardens of earlier Maharajahs. Arriving in the late afternoon, you’ll have time to freshen up and relax before we meet up for sunset tea and snacks overlooking the lake. During our stay here, be on the lookout for kites, peacocks, herons and wild ducks that call the nearby fields and monsoon fed lake home. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 13 Kishangarh

After yoga we’ll set out to learn a little bit about marble. Rajasthan is famous for its marble – you’ll see it in temples, homes and palaces and this morning you’ll get a chance to find out how it comes to be – from the quarry, to the cutting factory to the final product. After learning about marble we’ll head out to the banks of one of India’s largest salt lakes, Sambhar Lake, which has provided the local communities with salt for thousands of years. Throughout its history Rajputs, Mughals and British alike, have all exploited this rich source of salt. Here, we’ll visit the salt works and pans where we’ll see salt “farmed” using many of the same methods they used centuries ago. If we’re lucky we may also see some of the area’s colorful but shy winged visitors, the flamingos. We’ll return to the palace in the afternoon for lunch where you’ll have time to relax before we head out on foot into the village exploring the colorful bazaar and centuries-old streets of this princely state founded in 1611 AD. As the sun sets, we’ll return to the palace for a delicious feast of local vegan Marwari cuisine! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 14 Bharatpur

In the morning we set out for Bharatpur, home of the UNESCO World Heritage Keoladeo Ghana National Park. On the way to Bharatpur, we’ll stop in the village of Abhaneri to visit the epic Chand Baoli. Said to be the deepest and largest step-well in India, its history dates back well over half a millennium. After checking in to our hotel in Bharatpur and freshening up, we’ll head into the national park.

Day 15 Bharatpur and The Taj Mahal

In the morning after yoga and breakfast, we’ll visit the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built in the 16th century by Emperor Akbar, the well-preserved ruins were the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1571 and 1585 AD before being deserted. After exploring this ancient city we’ll head out for Agra where we’ll visit India’s most famous landmark – the stunning Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal of course needs no introduction, and is a remarkable mausoleum built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his favorite wife – Mumtaj Mahal. When one sees it in person understanding its history, the feeling is best summed up in the words of Rabindranath Tagore who described the tomb as “one tear drop” upon the cheek of time”. Returning to our hotel you’ll have time to relax and freshen up before we meet in the evening for snacks, drinks and a farewell vegan feast for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 1 Arrival in Delhi

Namaste! Welcome to Delhi! A teaming metropolis steamrolling into the modern age with new high-ways, skyscrapers and an ultra-modern Metro, Delhi still manages to retain much of its historical charm with its lively bazaars, captivating temples, epic mosques and narrow-winding side-streets lined with local shops and roadside vendors. A fusion of the old and new, Delhi’s streets are filled with cows, goats, bicycles and rickshaws that all share every possible space with taxis, trucks, cars in all shapes, sizes and conditions and the largest eco-friendly CNG bus network in the world. As we take in Delhi, remember its history doesn’t just date back decades nor centuries, but millenniums – the area originally being settled as far back as the 6th century BC. On arrival, we’ll meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel. In the morning, we’ll have our group introduction before jumping right in to the historical streets and alleys of India’s vibrant, bustling and at times chaotic capital city! For your first taste of India, we’ll explore the capital’s famous Connaught Place, or “CP” as the locals call it, India Gate and the Gandhi Smriti where Ghandiji spent his last days. We’ll also take a trip on the pride of Delhi – its sleek Metro, disembarking in the heart of the old city that we’ll explore by foot. No place is the city’s diversity more evident than in the heart of old Delhi where forts, temples of all faiths, mosques and bazaars sit side by side. Today, we’ll also sample some of the tastiest South Indian food found in the capital when we enjoy a feast of dosas, pooris, idlys and idiyappams! In the evening, we’ll settle down back at our hotel for our rooftop orientation meeting. With views of the old city, we’ll enjoy refreshing cool drinks, snacks and dinner while discussing the adventure that lies ahead. (Lunch, Dinner)

Day 2 Kishangarh

Today we journey to the romantic desert Kingdom of Kishangarh. Founded by a Jodhpur Prince in 1611, Kishangarh flourished with its military prowess and fortunes earned as a member of the Mughal court. The Maharajahs here were not only known for their successes on the battlefield, but also as patrons of the arts and the area’s paintings, many of which adorn the walls of their palaces including the one we’ll be staying in, are known throughout India. Our home for the next two nights – the Maharajah’s beautiful monsoon palace! Built in the 1870′s, the palace is located just outside Kishangarh Fort on the banks of the monsoon fed Gundalao Lake. During our stay, be on the lookout for peacocks, kites, herons and wild ducks that call the nearby fields and lake home. After freshening up, we’ll meet on the palace verandah for some chai (tea) and snacks before hiking into the village to explore the centuries-old streets and colorful bazaar of this old princely state. As the sun sets over this charming town and historical kingdom, we’ll join a local family at their home for drinks, local snacks and a delicious home-cooked vegetarian Rajasthani dinner! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 Kishangarh

Starting our day with yoga on the palace grounds overlooking the lake, we’ll have a hearty breakfast and then begin today’s adventure! Rajasthan is famous for its marble – you’ll see it in temples, homes and palaces and this morning we’ll get a chance to find out how it comes to be – from the quarry to the cutting factory to the final product. Next, we’ll head to the saltpans near India’s largest salt lake – Sambhar Lake. Throughout history Rajputs, Mughals and British alike have all exploited this rich source of salt and to this day salt is still “farmed” here using the same methods they used centuries ago. After seeing the salt flats, we’ll head to the nearby village of Roopangarh for lunch where we’ll dine in a royal palace that dates back to 1648. After lunch, we’ll explore the centuries-old streets of this colorful medieval town before heading back to Kishangarh to explore its 17th century fort – one of the few forts in Rajasthan that was never conquered. We’ll also make a special visit to a local school where we’ll be the guests of the students and teachers. At sunset, we’ll settle down back at the palace for sundowners with the lake at our front and the centuries-old fort at our back. Over refreshing cold drinks, snacks and a delicious local vegetarian feast we’ll enjoy live traditional folk music and dance. Make sure to bring your appetite, thirst, party shirt and of course – don’t forget your dancing shoes (flip-flops are okay too)! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 Jaipur

The capital of Rajasthan, the City of Victory, the Pink City – whatever name Jaipur has been called or title it has held, one thing is certain – it has intrigued and seduced travelers, wanderers, caravans and the like throughout history. Enamored and enticed by the legends, wealth and history it holds within its walls – the kingdom has drawn people for centuries from the furthest points on the globe. The city you see today was founded in the 1700′s, though the history of settlements in the area dates back to the 12th century. Rich in history, arts and architecture that many back in the day say were second to none; the city’s unique design was built using Vastu Shastra – the Indian version of Feng Shui. The desert terrain around the city consists of the rugged hills of the Aravallis, the oldest mountain range in India – where early rulers constructed gated passes, walls, palaces and forts in epic proportions – a good example of Rajput defensive architecture. Today we’ll explore Jaipur’s vibrant bazaars, temples and back alleys giving you a real local’s taste of the city. Speaking of taste, Indian vegetarian fare is truly a unique blend of fragrant spices, fresh veggies, flavorsome herbs and delectable breads and rice dishes. This being said, in the afternoon we’ll meet up with a local chef who will teach us how to prepare a delicious full course Indian vegetarian meal. Our first stop: the local market where we’ll learn about the traditional bazaar scene and pick up the ingredients we’ll need for tonight. After the market, we’ll head to the kitchen to cook up a delectable Rajasthani vegetarian feast. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves as we begin our cooking class where we’ll not only learn, but also cook tonight’s meal – so no mistakes (just kidding)! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 Jaipur

After our morning yoga in the garden and a hearty breakfast, we’ll jump right back into the streets of Jaipur exploring some of the historical capital’s most important landmarks. We’ll also spend time at a very special animal hospital and shelter in Jaipur that has been helping locally abused and neglected animals as well as standing up for our four legged friends without a voice for almost three decades. Some of the sights we’ll see today include the ancient seat of the present ruling Rajput clan of Jaipur before they moved their capital to its current location. Located 11 kilometers from the city center, the massive and impressive Amber Fort is a fusion of Hindu and Muslim architectural influences built from sandstone and marble. We’ll also visit Hawa Mahal, a.k.a. the Palace of Winds and the centuries-old Nahargarh Fort that overlooks the Pink City from a rugged ledge of the Aravallis. In the evening, we’ll visit a local hotspot for India’s famous vegetarian sweets (and they do have vegan sweets as well) before joining a local family at their home where we’ll enjoy traditional warm Marwari hospitality with drinks, snacks and a delicious home-cooked Jaipuri-style vegetarian dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6 Bharatpur

Today we set out back on the desert roads for Bharatpur – home of the UNESCO World Heritage Keoladeo Ghana National Park. A haven of wetlands and forests, the national park is home to over 400 species of birds, including a selection of herons believed to be among the best in the world, as well as a wide variety of other wildlife. On the way to Bharatpur, we’ll stop in Abhaneri village to visit its epic Chand Baoli step-well. Said to be the deepest and largest step-well in India, its history dates back well over half a millennium. While here, we’ll also visit the ancient Harshat Mata Temple before continuing on to Bharatpur. Arriving in Bharatpur in the early afternoon, you’ll have time to take a swim and freshen up before we hop aboard bicycles or peddle rickshaws (your choice) and explore the national park traversing the back trails of the sanctuary with our naturalist guide. As the sun sets over the wetlands of the wildlife reserve, we’ll return to our hotel located just a stones throw from the park for dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7 Bharatpur & Agra

Built in the 16th century by Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri was the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1571 and 1585 AD before being deserted due to a lack of water. The well preserved ruins of this ancient ghost town combine both Islamic and Hindu elements, as Emperor Akbar was known as one of the most open minded of Mughal Emperors. Today it is a World Heritage site. After exploring Fatehpur Sikri, it’s a short drive on to Agra – home of the Taj Mahal! Our first stop is the magnificent Agra Fort. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Agra Fort was home to some of the most important Mughal Emperors in history and is a testament of the empire’s legacy of conquer and conquest. After the fort, we move on to India’s most famous landmark – the stunning Taj Mahal. A remarkable mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his favorite wife – Mumtaj Mahal, when one sees it in person knowing its history the feeling is best summed up in the words of Rabindranath Tagore who described the tomb as “one tear drop…upon the cheek of time”. The Taj is also one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. In the evening, we’ll return to Bharatpur where you’ll have time to freshen up and get ready for tonight’s farewell party. So make sure you to bring a good appetite, a good thirst, your party shirt and dancing shoes (here too – flip-flops are okay) as we enjoy traditional live local folk music and dance, tasty snacks, refreshing drinks and a Rajasthani feast for dinner! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 Bharatpur to Delhi

After yoga and breakfast, we begin our trip back to Delhi. On the way, we’ll visit the sacred city of Mathura. An ancient holy city whose Hindu and Buddhist rich history dates back over 2,500 years, Mathura is believed to be the legendary birthplace of Lord Krishna. While here, we’ll visit some of the spiritual town’s most sacred sites including the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi and Vishram Ghats. After lunch in Mathura, we’ll continue back on the road to Delhi. Our adventure ends in the late afternoon on arrival in Delhi. If you would like to extend your stay here or for any onwards assistance, please contact your Adventure Leader who will be more than happy to help. Bahut, bahut dhanyavaad (thank you very much)! (Breakfast, Lunch)

Additional Accommodations

If you are a single traveler, we will pair you up with another group member of the same sex, who you would share a room with throughout the tour. However, if you are a single traveler and would like to have a room to yourself, a single supplement would be charged. Single supplement charges are as follows:

US$195 for The Green Triangle

Please consult your physician for vaccinations and other personal medical necessities including preventative medicines as may be recommended by your doctor.

PLEASE NOTE

VegVoyages does not use animals on our tours for expeditions, rides and/or safaris. Laws concerning the humane treatment of animals are lacked and rarely enforced in the countries our tours go to. Although there are exceptions, many animals such as horses, camels & elephants are often mistreated, forced to work long hours and live in poor conditions without proper care. Should you individually decide to engage activities where animals are used – such as safaris – please check to see that the animals you are renting have been treated well and that their living and working conditions are humane. Thank you for your understanding.

Days 1 and 2: Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Chugach National Forest

We’ll travel south on the scenic Seward Highway (a USDA National Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All American Road) along the Turnagain Arm to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on the Kenai Peninsula. The mountains of the Chugach Range and the Kenai Mountains will tower above us as we marvel at the scenery and look for wildlife along the way. We’ll camp near the waters edge at one of our favorite Alaskan lakes.

You will have a full day here to participate in a variety of recreational activities. We recommend taking advantage of the great hiking in the area and encourage you to use our canoes to explore the local lakes.

Other popular activities in the area include:

Hiking- There are multiple hiking trails within the Chugach National Forest and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to enchant a wide variety of hiking interests and abilities. Some of the highlights include pristine alpine lakes surrounded by towering mountains; spawning salmon leaping up a waterfall; and great wildlife viewing opportunities throughout our stay in the area. Your guide will explain your hiking options and will make recommendations based on our many years spent exploring and guiding in this region.

River Rafting- Two hour and full day scenic river rafting trips are available on the Kenai River.

Scenic Float- Float within the Chugach National Forest and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. During the two hour scenic float your guide will talk about the wildlife and history of the area. The views are outstanding. $54, $34 ages to 11.

Kenai Canyon Raft Trip- Travel deep into the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on a full day float down the Kenai River to Skilak Lake. The trip is capped with a motorized float along the shore of this very large, glacier carved lake- a true wilderness experience. $140, $99 ages to 11.

Day 3: Seward/ Kenai Fjords National Park

Humpback whale Kenai Fjords National Park

Today our destination is Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park, home of the 300 square mile Harding Ice Field and abundant marine wildlife. You will have a full day here to participate in a variety of recreational activities. Tonight we’ll stay at a Seward hotel.

There is outstanding hiking here for those who didn’t get enough the past few days. Hikers can choose between the Harding Ice Field trail at Exit Glacier or Caines Head trail along the shore of beautiful Resurrection Bay.

Or consider the other activities available. The glacier/wildlife cruise is one of our favorites.

Other popular activities in the area include:

Hiking- We recommend one of two day hikes in the Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park area. Choose between the Harding Ice Field Trail at Exit Glacier or Caines Head trail along the shore of beautiful Resurrection Bay. The Harding Ice Field Trail is a strenuous hike into Kenai Fjords National Park up the side of Exit Glacier; the higher you go the more sweeping the views. The Caines Head Trail follows the shore of Resurrection Bay through dense temporal rainforest with towering trees and magnificent views of the ocean. Depending on the time of year spawning salmon can be seen. Both hikes are wonderful.

Glacier/Wildlife Cruise- By far the most popular activity in the area is the glacier/wildlife cruise into the heart of Kenai Fjords National Park. Look for the abundant wildlife that can be observed including whales- orcas and humpbacks, sea otters, endangered Stellar sea lions, Dall porpoises, and colonies of nesting sea birds- including Puffins, cormorants, Oyster Catchers, and Bald Eagles to name a few. On the way you’ll visit an active tidewater glacier and watch and listen for falling ice. This is one of Alaska’s premier wildlife and glacier viewing trips and we highly recommend it! $139, $69 Age to 11.

Sea Kayaking- Explore Resurrection Bay by sea kayak with a shoreline paddle along Cain’s Head State Recreation Area. Look for sea otters, spawning salmon, eagles, seabirds and many others while enjoying the tranquility of the water from your kayak. From $65.

Alaska Sea Life Center- Visit a world class marine research facility. The many exhibits at the Alaska Sea Life Center immerse visitors in marine ecosystems and provide opportunities to watch animals in naturalistic habitats as well as research settings. This is a great ½ day activity. $20 Ages to 11 $10.

Denali Mt.

Our lakeside campsite Denali National Park

Day 4: Denali National Park

Denali Mt.

Today we travel north to Denali National Park. Mt. Denali (Mt. McKinley) (20,320 ft.), Mt. Foraker (17,400 ft.), and Mt. Hunter (14,573 ft.) are all visible (weather permitting) from several vistas along the way.

Continuing north, we will head over Broad Pass and into our first taste of the treeless north. On the north side of the Alaska Range we’ll meet up with the Nenana River which will lead us to Denali National Park.

This afternoon we’ll have time to explore the park entrance, visit the newly constructed Denali National Park Visitor Center and/or go on a short hike. This evening you can canoe from our exclusive campsite on Otto Lake.

Days 5 and 6: Denali National Park

Our lakeside campsite Denali National Park

We’ll spend two full days exploring the Denali region.
One day is set aside for a wildlife viewing tour into the heart of Denali National Park (included in tour cost). Keep your camera ready as you search for grizzly bears, black bears, moose, wolves, caribou, Dall sheep, arctic fox, and if you’re lucky, tremendous views of North America’s largest mountain, Mt. McKinley (Denali). Get off the bus for a hike in a wild and remote wilderness.

The other day is set aside for recreational activities based near the park entrance. There are multiple hiking options within Denali National Park near the park entrance.

Other popular activities in the area include:

Hiking- There are a number of great hiking options in Denali National Park. Hike up Mt Healy for sweeping views of Denali National Park and the Nenana River corridor. For those desiring a less strenuous hike there are multiple established trails surrounding the visitor center that are great hikes. Or, head into the park 15 miles on the free park shuttle and hike along the Savage River or hike up a nearby peak. Your guide will explain your hiking options and will make recommendations based on our many years experience exploring and guiding in this region.

Guided Ranger Hike- Guided ranger hikes are offered by the National Park Service. These vary in length and location. No Charge.

National Park Bus- You can head back into the park again for more wildlife viewing, perhaps a good view of Mt. McKinley, and/or another hike. $25.

River Rafting- Mild and wild whitewater rafting trips are offered on the Class II-IV Nenana River, the river that forms part of the Denali National Park Boundary.

MILD: Relax, and enjoy the scenery on a 2 plus hour float along the boundary of Denali National Park. Take in Mt Fellows, Mt Healy, Musher’s Monument and other surrounding peaks. Watch for wildlife along the river bank; moose, caribou, bears and wolves can be seen. $80, $52 Ages to 13.

WILD: The Nenana River Canyon is packed with over 10 Class III and IV rapids over a stretch of river 11 miles long, fun whitewater that is very suitable for beginners. Paddle rafting and oar rafting options are available. $85, $62 Ages 10-13.

River Kayaking- For a little more intimacy in your river experience, paddle an inflatable kayak down the float section of the Nenana River. Navigate a few class two rapids and practice your kayaking strokes while enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery. $85.

Flight Seeing- Flying is the most impressive way to view Mt McKinley (Denali) and the incredible scenery within Denali National Park. On a good weather day the views are truly breathtaking. Add a glacier landing for an experience beyond description. From $349 per adult, $235 Ages to 12.

Mountain Biking- Rent a Mt. Bike for a ride into Denali National Park- ride the park road or take the bus in and ride back. $40 full day $7 hour.

A little about Yoga Oasis:

We would like to invite you to visit our retreat center on the Big Island of Hawaii, in the Puna district. This is a retreat center to get away from it all, and we are away from it all! We’re offering this center to individuals and group leaders for exclusive use and personalized programs.
We are a short drive to the ocean, natural thermal hot springs, sauna steam caves, a black sand beach, surfing, snorkeling, tide pools, Lava Tree State Park, farmers market, hiking to Green Mountain & Green Crater Lake.
We are a secluded and private sanctuary, off the beaten path, nestled on 26 acres of lush rain forest and on Solar Power! We are surrounded by coconut palms, papaya, banana, mango, avocado and macadamia nut trees and a vast array of colorful, fragrant flowering plants, Sun, occasional rain showers and range from a perfect
65 to 85 degrees year round.

The facilities include: an expansive 1,420 square foot yoga studio with 18 foot high pine beam ceilings, studio quality sound system, and a state of the art “spring” floor.
(see photo below).

.

Two open walls are screened with fantastic views into the jungle. We can accommodate up to 30 guests. We have an organic fruit orchid, garden and local organic farmers, which we draw from to create our sumptuous vegetarian cuisine.
We are 45 minutes from Hilo Airport, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home of Kilauea, an active volcano that continues to add new land to the Big Island.
Mostly undeveloped and untouristed, the Big Island of Hawaii still retains the rich atmosphere of old Hawaii. We are near the ocean, yet in a remote area.
We highly recommend that you rent a car.
