Itinerary

Day 1: JAKARTA
Day 2: JAKARTA
Day 3, 4 & 5: GUNUNG LEUSER NATIONAL PARK
Day 6: MEDAN
Day 7,8 & 9: ORANGUTANS HAVEN
- Detailed Orientation Meeting where you will get to know your fellow travelers and adventure leaders better as we discuss the adventure ahead and have our Introduction to Orangutan Conservation and Sumatra’s History, Cultures, and Diversity Presentation.
- Your first official “Taste of the Jakarta” – minus the durian where we will enjoy a variety of mouthwatering local dishes.
- Put together supply packages for the local community in “urban village” we’ll be guests of tonight.
- Guests of a local family, we’ll learn about the ups and downs of living and working in the largest city in South East Asia as we join them at their home in one of Jakarta’s 600+ “urban villages” and enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner.
- Introduction to the Eating Etiquette of Indonesia, following local eating customs and etiquette.
Day 2: JAKARTA
- Vegan breakfast feast of traditional dishes from around the archipelago.
- Guest of our friends at Indonesia’s 1st all-vegan school where compassionate education is the key focus of the curriculum.
- Join teachers and students for a vegan lunch of tasty local Indonesian classics cooked up in their all-vegan canteen.
- Join the city’s leading local vegan activists for dinner at one of the city’s popular plant-based cafés.
Day 3, 4 & 5: GUNUNG LEUSER NATIONAL PARK
- Flight from Jakarta over the Sunda Straits to Sumatra.
- Staying at a sustainability-focused eco-lodge at the edge of the rainforest.
- In-depth presentation from the leading frontline activists of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) on the plight of the orangutans and the fight to save their habitat.
- An in-depth presentation about the Gunung Leuser National Park, what we should be observing, and how we should respect the rainforest by key members of the SOCP and leading local naturalists.
- Half-day educational jungle hike into the National Park, with a focus on observing the Orangutan where it is supposed to live – in the wild, its survival traits from building nests to finding food.
- Half-day educational jungle hike into the National Park specifically focused on observing the important role the rainforest plays in the lives of the Orangutan and the hundreds of other species that call it their home.
- Experience the thrill of going down the river at the heart of this part of the rainforest on giant tubes tide together into makeshift rafts.
- Sunset hike and visit to a cave.
- Evening Discussion and Slide Presentation on Wildlife Conservation in Indonesia.
- Daily specially prepared vegan buffets highlighting the local dishes from the local communities.
- Nightly local drinks and vegan snacks.
Day 6: MEDAN
- Travel to Medan, the capital city of the province of North Sumatra. Also known as “foodie town” because of the many different communities who settled here over the years, bringing with them their cultural influences and of course – their mouthwatering cuisines!
- Special vegan breakfast buffet at the eco-retreat.
- Vegan meet-up with local vegans and animal rights activists at our favorite vegan café in Medan.
Day 7,8 & 9: ORANGUTANS HAVEN
- 3 days of helping out at an extraordinary sanctuary set-up to save the Orangutan. We’ll be helping out wherever we can from planting trees to maintaining the island enclosures and surrounding grounds, to helping in the preparation of Orangutan meals and assisting in education campaigns on the grounds of the Orangutan Haven – a vital voice for Orangutans and other species fighting for survival in the wilds of Sumatra!
- Staying well-off-the-beaten-track next door to the Haven in the shadows of palm plantations, on the borders of Batakland and at the edge of secondary rainforest home to birds, monkeys, and other wildlife, on the edge of a small river.
- In-depth presentation from the leading frontline activists of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) on the ongoing work being done to save the Orangutan and preserve their habitat.
- Introduction to Orangutan Coffee with tasting session.
- Nightly fruit tasting sessions – enjoy everything from fresh rambutans to mangosteens and our favorite – durian!
- Daily specially prepared vegan meals highlighting the local dishes from the different communities of the area – including the Batak tribes of the region, all 100% veganized especially for us.
- Vegan Cooking Class of our favorite Sumatran dishes.
- Nightly local drinks and vegan snacks.
- Tree planting community carbon offset session to cover the carbon emissions from our flights from Jakarta to Sumatra.
Day 10 & 11: LAKE TOBA
Day 12: LAKE TOBA TO JAKARTA
- 2 nights stay well-off-the-beaten-path on the shores of Lake Toba, the second largest lake in Southeast Asia.
- Explore and hike into the surrounding countryside as guests of our family and friends learning about life in the Batak heartland home to rice paddies, small villages, terrific tombs, and epic views.
- Learn about the history, culture, traditions, and customs of the Batak people as guests of the local community.
- Special lakeside lunch and dinner featuring regional favorites specially veganized just for us.
- Join family and friends for a traditional Batak ceremony and traditional village welcoming ritual.
- Special festive farewell party – Batak style, where we’ll enjoy drinks, local snacks, and Batak melodies accompanied by a delicious vegan Batak feast.
Day 12: LAKE TOBA TO JAKARTA
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will continue with the Khmer / Thai fusion from the talented team at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Jungle walks where we will learn about the fauna and flora that call this protected sanctuary home.
- Spend time observing the trio of resident elephants, in their own environment and understand their stories.
- Get ‘hands-on’ and lend our support to a variety of essential tasks that need to be undertaken at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary including preparing the elephants (and other resident rescued wildlife) meals.
- Our final dinner will be another ‘hands-on’ experience as we work alongside the kitchen team to prepare and create a vegan feast for everyone!
