We want to bring you on a story, a personal journey…
An adventure over a decade in the making, about a story that’s over 3,000 years old…
Journey with us to the Island of Serendib…

Vegan tour to Sri Lanka. Once known in ancient texts as the Island of Serendib and Ceylon, Sri Lanka is home to stunning white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue coral laden waters, lush tropical jungles, and savannah-like plains. Also, home to ancient Buddhist and Hindu ruins, brilliant bustling bazaars and overflowing vibrant veggie and fresh fruit markets, mouthwatering cuisines and magnificent monuments, and colorful cultures rich in traditions and rituals.

Imagine a country a little smaller than Ireland, but with almost 5 times the amount of people. Not only that Sri Lanka is home to the majority Sinhalese, but also Sri Lankan Tamils, Tamils of recent Indian Origin, Dutch Burghers, Portuguese Burghers, Muslim Moors, Malay, Javanese, Colombo Chetties, Veddas, and Coastal Veddas, Parsis, Sindhis, Chinese, Bohras, Memons, Bharata people, and many more who have called the island their home for generations, if not centuries.

Whether attracted to its shores as refuge by those fleeing persecution in search of a homeland, by seekers and preachers of spiritual enlightenment, missionaries, the usual gamut of opportunists and profiteers lured by its rich natural resources – they all took refuge on its shores, into its foothills and up into mountains and over time, created this culturally rich, spiritually manifested, and vibrantly diverse island nation. This is Sri Lanka’s story.

From the stunning sandy beaches and lush wildlife-rich jungles to ancient cities and off-the-beaten-track villages, and everywhere in between. Be guests of local communities, grassroots conservationists, families, and friends, and a whole lot more – all representing the island’s rich cultural diversity and ethnic groups who are – Sri Lanka!

And of course, because we love to eat, we definitely cannot forget the food. Prepare to enjoy a feast of fantastically delicious local vegan food from the many diverse cultures who have called the island of Sri Lanka their home for centuries – from home kitchens as well as leading local chef prepared vegan feasts!

Day 1 – Colombo
WELCOME TO THE ISLAND OF SERENDIPITY –  COLORFUL CUSTOMS, CULTURES & CUISINES.  DELICIOUS DUTCH BURGHER FEAST OF LAMPRAIS ALL 100% VEGAN – AS WE’RE KICKIN’ IT IN THE OL’ CAPITAL OF COLOMBO!

Ayubowan, Vanakkam, and Welcome to Colombo, Sri Lanka! Located along the ancient sea trading routes, Colombo has been on the maps so-to-speak for over 2,000 years with trading fleets as far as Greece, Roman, and Persian traders to the west, and Chinese traders to the east. Nestled along the coast of the Lakshadweep Sea, our home in Colombo is the historical Mount Lavinia Hotel located right on the beach with a gorgeous pool overlooking the sea. Originally built as the Governor of British Ceylon’s residence, this historic mansion is not only one of the most iconic hotels in the country, but also one of its oldest at over 210 years old!

After our orientation meeting, without hesitation, we’ll head out for a Heritage Walk into the vibrant streets of Colombo where its rich history and cultural diversity is ever so evident in its colorful cafes, bustling bazaars, amazing architecture, places of worship, and of course – its people.  (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 2 – Colombo
SENSATIONAL SITES, SOUNDS, SCENTS & TASTES OF COLOMBO – FROM BUSTLING BAZAARS, SPICE MARKETS & HOME KITCHENS, TO CINNAMON, AND FANTASTIC FEAST WITH FELLOW VEGANS!

Today, we’ll head out into the bustling veggie & spice bazaars of the old trading capital of Colombo! Sri Lanka, being strategically located on the crossroads between the east and west in the Indian Ocean, actually has a wonderfully tasty and very diverse cuisine – or should we say cuisines. The Portuguese, Dutch and British were all drawn here by spices and the island’s strategic location along the ancient maritime spice trade routes. The Indian, Arab and Chinese traders among others were trading with the different Sri Lankan kingdoms for centuries – with Arabs setting up shop in Jaffna, Galle, and Colombo. The maritime trade had a very big influence on the country’s delicious cuisines. Developed largely as a result of the fusion between local ingredients, cooking traditions and the cooking traditions of the spice-seeking merchants and immigrants that came through and trade on the island.

So today, as we begin with a visit to the local veggie, herb and spice market, followed up by a delicious cooking class of some of Sri Lanka’s most famous dishes and snacks, then closing it off with a vegan feast of the island’s classics. Be prepared to eat – and eat well!
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 – Anuradhapura
REMARKABLE RELICS & RUINS, MESMERIZING MEDITATION, THERAVADA BUDDHISM & EARLY SINHALESE HISTORY, IN SRI LANKA’S FIRST CAPITAL – ANCIENT ANURADHAPURA!

If you take a majority Buddhist population, this small island nation is actually the oldest continuously Buddhist majority country in the world.  Buddhism is practiced by approximately 70% of the population and is associated as the primary religion of the majority ethnic group Sinhalese people – who make up roughly 75% of the population. It is believed that Theravada Buddhism, the oldest school of Buddhist thought in the world, arrived on the shores of Lanka between the third century BC, shortly after its conception.

It is said that Emperor Asoka, credited as one of the greatest influencers of Buddhism spreading to other parts of Asia, sent his son, Venerable Mahinda to Sri Lanka to help spread Buddha’s teachings.  His sister followed, bringing with her a sapling from the Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment.  The sapling would be planted at, and the first Buddhist monastery to be established on the island, at Anuradhapura – one of the earliest, and must be said greatest, of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals. Anuradhapura would become one of the greatest political and religious capitals the island kingdoms would ever know lasting for nearly 13 centuries.

It is often coined as Sri Lanka’s first capital, Anuradhapura would grow to be the “capital” of Theravada Buddhism in the world and one of the leading centers in ancient times of Buddhist studies, teaching, philosophy, art, and culture. This afternoon, we’ll spend our time as guests of a local Buddhist monastery, learning about Theravada Buddhism, and also be introduced to the “basics” of Vipassana Meditation, which was taught by Lord Buddha over two and half millennia ago. (Breakfast Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 – Mannar & Jaffna
JOURNEY WELL-OFF-THE-BEATEN PATH TO THE HISTORICAL, SPIRITUAL, CULTURAL & YES, CULINARY CAPITAL OF SRI LANKAN TAMILS – JAFFNA…

Vanakkam and welcome to Jaffna. Located less than 50 kilometers as the crow flies to India, historically Jaffna has been the cultural & religious capital of Sri Lankan Tamils whose roots go back here well over a millennium. Called Sri Lanka’s final frontier – Jaffna has its own very unique identity, adding very much to the diversity of the island. With its kaleidoscope of colorful Hindu temples, meandering cow and palm-fringed lanes, slowly peddling bicycles, and bustling – yet strikingly calm markets complete with shops selling everything from lungis (sarongs), saris and the latest Tamil tunes, to banana leaf rice and curry meals, freshly fried vadais and piping hot thosais, and the rhythmic sounds of kottu roti being minced filling the air.

In the 1980’s as civil war began to grip the island, Jaffna became a focus of control and power among the different fighting factions and was occupied at one time or another, on one level or another, for the next two decades by the LTTE (Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam, a.k.a. Tamil Tigers), the Sri Lankan Army and the IPKF (Indian Peacekeeping Force).  Because of this, the city also has the tragic distinction of being home to some of the war’s fiercest fighting, with sieges, house-to-house fire-fights, and bombardments leaving nothing but rubble in certain parts, making the life for locals who remained here unbearable at best.

Since the end of the war in 2009, Jaffna and the people who remained, as well as those who are returning, are emerging, climbing back from decades of turmoil and isolation from the rest of the country, and what could also accurately be said – much of the world. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 – Jaffna
FOLK MUSIC, DANCE, CENTURIES OLD TRADITIONAL STREET THEATER & DELICIOUS NORTHERN DELICACIES!

Starting the day with Jaffna style breakfast – complete with thosais, piping hot rasam, coconut chutneys & curries, today we’ll join a local grassroots organization who are instrumental in helping in the healing process after the war and bringing communities and people together through music, dance and drama. As guests of the students and teachers at the center, we’ll learn about the local culture, the arts of music and dance unique to the Sri Lankan Tamil communities of this area.  One of these unique arts is “Koothu”, ancient Tamil folk art of storytelling throughout music, songs, and dance.  Usually performed by theatrical groups who would travel from village to village, and spread important social messages and education through entertainment.  In the evening, we’ll join the troupe to not only see but participate in the work they do in getting the word out on important social messages to rural villages in Northern Sri Lanka through the, unfortunately, dying art of Koothu.  Before there were movies or TV’s, for a majority of the masses in rural villages street theater was not only one of the few forms of entertainment available, but this means of storytelling was (and is) a vital way of bringing important social issues, preventative health lessons, conscious awareness and other pertinent teachings to the masses.

As the moon rises over the Jaffna Peninsula, we’ll close the evening with a tasty vegan dinner of home-cooked dishes under the stars with our local host family.  (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6 – Jaffna
SWAYING PALMS, QUIET LANES, COLORFUL MARKETS, TEMPLES, CHURCHES, A FORMIDABLE FORT, FANTASTIC FOOD & LOVELY LAGOONS AS WE EXPLORE JAFFNA AND LEARN ABOUT THE LOCAL WAY OF LIFE – FROM A LOCAL’S POINT OF VIEW!

After a Jaffna style breakfast – all created 100% vegan for us, this morning we’ll enjoy string hoppers, warm coconut paal sothi, pickles, and katharikai poriyal (perfectly flavored sautéed eggplant), and fresh tropical fruits! Then, we’ll join a longtime local resident of Jaffna and set out into the lanes and boulevards of Ol’ Jaffna, the surrounding countryside and lagoons to learn about the local way of life in this century-old town.  Stopping along the way at local bazaars, local temples, library, fort, and local landmarks – we’ll learn about the unique way of life and history of the communities who have called Jaffna their home for generations. In the early afternoon, we’ll down with a local family for a tasty lunch of fresh delicacies.

Then, since we’ve kept you busy over the past days, you’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening free to take it easy. Rest, catch up with some books, take a long nap, or explore the town at your own pace. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 7 – Polonnaruwa & Elephant Conservation Program
ANCIENT RUINS & AWESOME ELEPHANTS – OUR JOURNEY SOUTH TO THE PLAINS OF POLONNARUWA WHERE WE’LL JOIN ONE OF THE ISLAND’S LEADING CONSERVATIONISTS TO LEARN ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF SRI LANKA’S ELEPHANTS AND THE FIGHT TO SAVE THEM!

Today we’ll head south making our way into Sri Lanka’s evergreen forested interior which is home to over 160 species of birds, 34 species of reptiles & amphibians and 24 plus species of mammals including the island’s protected Sri Lanka’s Elephants – one of three sub-species of the endangered Asian Elephant.  Arriving at our hotel just outside the UNESCO Heritage World Heritage Ancient Town of Polonnaruwa, after delicious lunch, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the beautiful trees, gardens, and nature that surrounding our hotel.  Over the next day and a half, we’ll join one of the island’s leading conservationists and elephant experts who will introduce us to magnificent Sri Lanka’s Elephants, their plight and the fight to save them, including the very important aspect of education to create a peaceful co-existence between people and wild elephants.  (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 – Polonnaruwa, Elephant Conservation & Kaudulla National Park
ELEPHANT CONSERVATION, AND KAUDULLA NATIONAL PARK – LEARNING ABOUT PLIGHT OF SRI LANKA’S ELEPHANTS & HELPING OUT WHEREVER WE CAN…

After a delicious breakfast of vegan Kurakkan Roti, vegan Lunu Miris, and selections of chutneys – amongst other tasty dishes, hot cups of Black Coffee and the famous Sri Lankan Tea, we’ll head out to learn more about Sri Lanka’s Elephant. Habitat Loss, Fragmentation, Human Encroachment, Poaching, Captivity – these are the facts facing the Asian Elephants fight for survival, and all these facts have one thing in common – humans.  Today, we will learn firsthand from those on the frontline to protect and save Sri Lanka’s elephants.  From one of the country’s leading elephant experts to rangers to local communities, coming together and come up with ways to live together, and protect these incredible pachyderms.  Creating a peaceful harmony between people and wild elephants is probably one of the most important keys to Sri Lanka’s 4,000 plus wild elephants surviving with 22 million people on an island 10 times smaller than the state of Texas. Returning to our hotel, you’ll have time to freshen up before we meet up for dinner under the stars! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 9 – Thennadi Bay
RUINS, RELICS, REEFS AND MARINE-LIFE RICH WATERS AS WE JOURNEY TO ONE SRI LANKA’S LEAST VISITED STRETCHES OF COAST AND OUR FAVORITE REEF ON THE ISLAND – AS WELL AS A CULTURAL CULINARY RICE & CURRY EXPERIENCE – EAST COAST STYLE!

This morning we’ll explore the ancient ruins of the UNESCO World Heritage City – Polonnaruwa. Ranked as the best planned archaeological ancient city in the country. Polonnaruwa became the 2nd capital of Sri Lanka’s early kingdoms.  The area was chosen by the Chola Empire of South India who saw it as a more strategic location to defend off the invasion, as well as due to its rich fertile lands for farming and irrigation. The Cholas would rule here for just over a half century from the late 10thcentury until the second half of the 11th century when they were defeated after a seven-month siege of the city.

After exploring this historical ancient ruin, we head off to the east coast of Sri Lanka to one of the island’s least developed stretches of coastline. Small villages, serene post-card picture-perfect lagoons… and our personal favorite – the best reef on the island!

We’ll be staying in bungalows on the shores of a tranquil lagoon, home to crystal clear blue water, our favorite coral reef on the island (we’ve been diving in Sri Lanka for two and half decades), and yes, white sandy beaches! You’ll have time to freshen up before meeting for orientation to the amazing marine-life rich coral reef waters and the struggle to save this vital and fragile eco-system, and of course, then head out to get our first glimpse of this amazing reef as we snorkel.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit a local farm for cultural culinary rice & curry experience – where we’ll learn to make a full course rice & curry meal from farm to table! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 10 – Thennadi Bay
COOL (AND YES, WE MEAN COOL) CORAL REEFS, FABULOUS FROLICKING FISHES, BEAUTIFUL BEACHES, BALMY TROPICAL BREEZES, AND GRASSROOTS MARINE-LIFE CONSERVATION – Another Day on Thennadi Bay!

Starting the day with a Seaside Yoga near the Bay and then enjoy a delightful traditional breakfast made vegan especially for us. Thennadi Bay’s beautiful waters are not just home to stunning coral reefs, but these welcoming waters offer a wonderful home to a plethora of marine life, from parrot fish, groupers, butterfly fish, triggerfish, clownfish and sweetlips, to angelfish, Napoleons, moray eels, damsels, wrasses, rays, and sea turtles, to name a few. So, without hesitation, we’ll board our boats and continue our exploration of its delightful underwater world!

After our underwater exploration, we’ll return to our beachside bungalows for lunch. Then you’ll have some time to unwind & take in the charm on the sandy shores of the Thennadi Bay. Walk into the nearby village, take a dip into the pool, snorkel the nearby reef or swim in the Indian Ocean’s lovely blue waters, or just chill’ with a drink beachside – it’s up to you!

In the late afternoon, we’ll meet up with local members of the nearby villages for a community beach conservation, clean up and protection project. Then, as the moon rises over the bay, we’ll enjoy sundowners and a vegan feast of east coast favorites! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 11 – Kandy
STEPPIN’ BACK IN TIME, HYPNOTIC DANCE STEPS, AND STEPPIN’ OUT IN THE OVER HALF MILLENNIUM OLD CITY FOR FANTASTIC FUSION FEAST!

With the balmy breezes at our backs, we say goodbye to the sea and head inland and up into the country’s lush green hill country! Home to thick forest-clad mountains, dense jungles, and tea plantations, we’ll make our way to the last capital of Sri Lanka’s independent kings – Kandy! Nestled in a plateau valley at around 1,500 feet above sea level and stretching out around a lake at its center, the old town and the history of its surroundings go back well over 600 years. Being the last Kingdom to fall to colonial powers, Kandy became a bastion of art, culture and Buddhist studies – which is reflected in its music, arts, dance, temples, and architecture.

Our home for the next three days is one of the most legendary and iconic buildings in the country. At over 160 years old, with its hardwood floors, high ceilings, grand arches & vintage interior… you cannot help but be transported back to a bygone era. Short walking distance to the old town Kandy,  a short distance to the sacred Temple of Tooth, Mosques, Churches, colorful markets, shop houses selling everything from saramas to saris, jewelry to pantry provisions, and a plethora of cafes and pubs – this is the perfect place to take in the history, heritage, cultural diversity and placid pace in which is Kandy!

After a tasty vegan fusion lunch, we’ll join one of the foremost experts and teachers of Kandyan dance where we’ll be introduced to the wonderful, ancient, mesmerizing and magical forms of Kandyan dance. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 12 – Kandy
THE STORY OF CEYLON TEA – HISTORY, LEGACY AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, THE PEOPLE IN THE HILL COUNTRY OF SRI LANKA!

Sri Lanka is famous for its tea, maybe the most famous tea in the world.  It is the world’s 4th largest producer of tea. But there is much more to tea than just being an aromatic cup of hot or cold beverage.  Tea has history, has a legacy, not just of trade, health, and commerce, but also, of people.  So today you’ll be introduced to the story of the people behind the tea, from their point of view and their voice. The tea industry employs over 1 million people and it is one of the leading sources of the country’s foreign exchange.  The British smuggled a tea plant to Sri Lanka from China in 1824. But wasn’t until 1867, that James Taylor started tea as an industry on the island with his tea plantation estate in Kandy on just 19 acres of land.  Now tea is cultivated on roughly 464,990 acres, which is roughly 4% of the country’s total land.

In the early evening, we’ll visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic.  Dating back over 3 centuries, the temple was built to house a sacred tooth relic of Buddha. Kandyan Kings built the Temple as a home to protect the tooth between 1687 and 1707. After visiting the temple, you have free time to explore the lively colorful streets of old Kandy at your own pace. Catch up on your souvenir list, relax with a traditional massage, walk around town taking in the historical charm and pace of this over half millennium old city, grab a drink at a local café or pub and just chill in Kandy! (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 13 – Kandy
FUSION FEAST FOR BREAKFAST AND VEGIN’ OUT IN THE CENTRAL HILL COUNTRY CAPITAL OF OL’ KANDY, WITH MOONRISES, MUSIC AND A MOUTHWATERING VEGAN CULINARY CELEBRATION OF SRI LANKA’S CUISINES!

Breakfast this morning is a Taste of Kandy – Sri Lankan Traditional Fusion Breakfast of local chef’s favorite dishes – all created 100% vegan! After breakfast, you’ll have the morning and afternoon free to explore on your own, take a cool dip in the pool, or catch up on your journal (or Facebook).  The wide varieties of shops spread out along the colorful streets and lanes of old’ town Kandy are great for souvenirs shopping for anyone on your list. Relax with a traditional Sri Lankan massage, sip on a hot cup of coffee or the island’s famous tea while taking in the beautiful lake views – or just kick back, relax and enjoy the historical and cultural capital of the central highlands of the Island of Serendib.

In the late evening, as the colors of the day change to night time, over the almost 600-year-old ancient city, we’ll meet up poolside in our over century and half old residence for our farewell dinner party where we will enjoy an evening of refreshing island drinks and of course – a delicious traditional vegan Sri Lankan feast for dinner! So tonight, make sure you bring your appetite, thirst – and don’t forget your party shirt!  (Breakfast, Dinner)
